Research Projects in Tropical Ecology

The DelVal Short Course in Tropical Ecology culminates in group research projects under the direction of one of the faculty leaders. After forming hypotheses on the ecology or behavior of native organisms, students are able to design and complete their own experiements. At the completion of the course, students gather at the field station to share oral presentations on their findings. Here is a sampling of just a few recent projects:

  • Variation in species distribution of nectar feeding butterflies as a function of forest type
  • Foraging patterns of neotropical bats: influence of habitat complexity
    on feeding preferences
  • Prey selection in ant lions: effects of body size and pit size
