Virus & Spyware Guide

There are many things that go wrong with your computer. Sometimes these problems are caused by viruses, spyware or other types of malicious software(malware). There are several steps you can take to protect your computer.

  • Maintain up to date antivirus software. For college owned computers, Technology Services takes care of the updating and maintenance of Symantec Antivirus. We also provide Symantec Antivirus to all resident students. For more information on antivirus software please go to the appropriate sections.

  • Keep your operating system up to date. Whether you use Windows, a Mac or a Linux system you should follow the appropriate steps to keep your system current. This will help keep any vulnerabilities from being exploited. Most operating systems have built in tools to help you with this. For example, Microsoft has Windows Update, now known as Microsoft Update. You should also try to keep your programs up to date. Not only will you help protect yourself from vulnerabilities, you may experience a performance boost or a new feature.

  • Use common sense. If something doesn't seem right then it probably isn't. An internet pop up telling you that you have spyware nd providing you with a "Fix It Now" type button will probably just install spyware onto your computer. Use trusted and proven tools to try and rid yourself of spyware/malware. Make sure you read all messages and warnings in these programs so you do not accidently remove something important. You can try a few that we like at our Downloads and Tools Section
