February 17, 2008 - AITP Computer 4 Kids Program

AITP club members Shawn Carelli (AITP President), Dan Shute, Tom Trycieki, Dom McGraw and Jason Palmer (DelVal Technology Services) along with their advisor Andrew Levin, met to begin preparing computers for the Computers 4 Kids project. The Computers 4 Kids project is where we refurbish donated desktops with the Ubuntu operating system and OpenOffice Office suite in order to donate to underprivileged children in PA.

The AITP club is going beyond mere donations in that we will hold classes for the children to acclimate themselves to the computer's hardware and software. By giving the children instruction on the computer, fear is reduced and the children are encouraged to immediately use the computer. We are working with the Legacy Program of DelVal to get the children to our college from Philadelphia. As an added benefit of this project, Segal 004 was rearranged to make better use of the space. Now, students in Segal 004 have two workspaces each at their disposal, one workspace with a new computer and the other for experimenting on older machines.
