Beekeeping

beesDelaware Valley College offers students the ability to study beekeeping. Our unique program is enhanced by the location of DelVal's on-campus apiary and bee colony.

This course is offered under the direction of Dr. Robert Berthold, Professor of Biology, in cooperation with Mr. Gary Bradshaw, commercial beekeeper. Students will discuss the home uses of honey, discuss honey-bee life history, learn how to avoid stings, choose apiary locations, discuss seasonal management, study queen rearing, discuss cooking with honey, and learn about the removal and processing of the honey crop and beeswax. Additional topics include mites, mead, candle making and related topics.

The class is intended for all skill levels; no student should be dissuaded from registration due to lack of knowledge. Last year’s class included participants ranging from professional beekeepers to beginning hobbyists. Several teachers and nature center directors also attended and plan to use the material in their own classrooms. Several students attended the course as part of their summer vacations.

For information about class times and schedules, please see below. For more information, or to learn how to register, please feel free to call (215) 489-2375.
