Dr. Karen Schramm joined the DelVal faculty in 1996. Co-designer of the department's major in Written Communications, she serves as Advisor to DelVal's literary and artistic publication, "The Gleaner." An active researcher, she has published numerous articles on American literature, biographies, grammar and the environment. Most recently, she authored "No Vacancy in the Built Environment: America as Cultural Construct," in the volume "Constructing Culture: Built Environment and Land."
Dr. Schramm received her B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Delaware. She has received numerous awards, including an IDEA National Ranking for Teaching Effectiveness, a Graduate Fellowship in 19th-century American Literature, membership in the Athenaeum Honor Society and a prize for Best Article in the journal "Teaching for Success."
Dr. Schramm has served on the Curriculum and Honors Committees and has been active in the Freshman Orientation Program, Freshman English Placement Exam grading, Faculty Search Committees and Faculty Evaluation. Prior to joining the DelVal faculty, Dr. Schramm served as copy-editor for the Rutgers Dean of Business Studies and the journal "Advances in Organizational Psychology." She also conducted research for the Educational Testing Service, exploring the connection between students' experience in reading/writing and their development of writing ability. Dr. Schramm thoroughly enjoys helping students to achieve success in their chosen field.
