Dr. Ellen Carlin, a senior health and policy specialist at EcoHealth Alliance, will present a lecture about the link between animal, human, and environmental health at Delaware Valley University on Wednesday, March 28. The talk will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building auditorium. All are welcome, and there is no cost to attend. Guests do not need to register in advance.

The definition of “One Health” varies widely and at times seems more of a catchy, hashtagged buzzword than an underlying model for approaching the health of the living world.  Examples from the veterinary profession, public health, and the policy world in prior centuries will be addressed to explain how the links among animal, human, and environmental health were sometimes better understood in the past than they are in modern times.

Dr. Carlin is working on scientific and policy initiatives that advance the ecological health mission of EcoHealth Alliance.  She staffs biodefense policy and biosurveillance projects there and supports EcoHealth’s global work through a joint research associate position with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.  Dr. Carlin received a Bachelor of Science in biology from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine.

The presentation is being sponsored by the University’s One Health Working Group and DelVal’s School of Life and Physical Sciences.

One Health is a multi-disciplinary approach that works locally, regionally, nationally and globally to attain optimal well-being for people and society, the environment and plants, and animals. Together, the three major components make up the One Health triad, and the well-being of each is inextricably linked to the others in the triad.
