DelVal Staff Contribute to International Book on Experiential Learning in Higher Education

Two staff members from Delaware Valley University recently served as contributing authors to the book “High Impact & Experiential Learning as Enhancing Quality on Campus,” a publication by Vernon Press examining the role of experiential learning in strengthening student outcomes across higher education institutions.

Andrew Moyer, dean of Student Support and assistant dean of students, and Laura Craig, director of Student Professional Development, were invited to contribute a chapter by Dr. Jeffrey R. Breese, one of the book’s editors. Breese sought their perspective because of DelVal’s longstanding institutional commitment to experiential learning.

Moyer and Craig’s chapter traces the history of experiential learning at the University, which stems from its foundation 130 years ago, and highlights recent examples of student engagement through DelVal’s Experience360 Program. Their work incorporates data that illustrates the University’s continued commitment to providing high-impact experiential learning opportunities for all students.

DelVal is one of only a few higher education institutions that has had an experiential learning requirement for all students from its inception. Craig and Moyer agree that DelVal’s model provides a unique example for other institutions exploring how to embed experiential learning in their curricula. 

“The fact that DelVal has truly been doing this from the beginning is noteworthy. Even though the market has many more institutions that require experiential learning, it’s relatively few who require the same thing for everyone,” Craig said.

Moyer added that the opportunity to contribute to the publication provided a valuable moment to reflect on the E360 Program’s impact.

“I always appreciate the opportunity to assess and reflect on the power of the E360 Program,” Moyer said. “Working on this chapter reminded me, once again, that we are preparing students for their future success through high-quality experiences as a student.”
