ACADEMIC

You can find your academic advisor listed on Student Planning and contact them for their office hours. For first time freshman, your advisor is your DelVal Experience I Instructor.

Registration Hold information is displayed to students when they log into Student Planning. Students should contact the owner of the Hold (ex: Financial = Bursar, Advising Hold = Advisor, Health Hold = Student Health Center, Success Hold = Office of Student Support and Engagement, etc.) to find out what they need to complete to have the hold removed.

It is always best to talk with a faculty member first but students may also consult the Academic Grievance policy outlined in the University Catalog for steps on how to resolve an academic conflict or dispute. More information can be found in the University Catalog.

Department chairs are listed on the website within each academic dept. Consult the department webpage to identify the chairperson and then contact them through email for office hours.

All students register through Student Planning which can be accessed through my.delval.edu. A tutorial on how to register is available by following this Student Planning Tutorial. For Fall and Spring Terms all students are assigned a start time for registration based on completed credits. You can view this start time and date weeks before registration on Student Planning.

You can see your current GPA by logging in to Student Planning, and either:

  • Click on the Student Planning tab, and your GPA will be at the top under "Program/Cumulative GPA"
  • Click on the Grade tab, and your GPA will be on the bottom of the page

You can add or drop a course during the add/drop periods at the start of a term in Student Planning. For the Fall and Spring terms the add period is one week and the drop period is two weeks so plan accordingly and speak with your advisor.

If you need to miss a class you should speak with your instructor prior to the absence. Be aware that missing class may negatively impact your grade and should only be done when it cannot be avoided. The complete attendance policy can be found in the University Catalog.

You should speak with your department chair if you need a new advisor or are requesting a change. If your current advisor is the department chair, please contact the dean of your school.

Classroom locations are listed in Student Planning next to the course section on your schedule. You can view the campus map to locate the appropriate building. It’s a good idea to review your course locations prior to the start of the term.

You should submit a course substitution form to the Registrar’s Office. The form is available on the Registrar’s Student Resources page.

If you cannot avoid a conflict, you can request permission via a form to take both courses. The form is available on the Registrar’s Student Resources page.

Full time status for undergraduates is 12 credits. Students taking online or remedial courses should check with Financial Aid to ensure they are not taking too many courses of this type as this may impact certain scholarships. If you withdraw from a course that course credit load is still counted. For example, if you take 12 credits, and withdraw from 3, you are still considered full time for that term. If you drop from a course those credits will not be counted in the term. Student athletes who wish to withdraw from courses should check with their coach to see if they are still eligible to play.

Students can plan out their courses in advance using Student Planning and their major’s suggested course sequence in the University Catalog.

You can drop from a course using Student Planning in the first two weeks of the term.

Withdraws are done using a form. The form is available on the Registrar’s Student Resources page.

Drops do not count in your term load and do not show up on the transcript while withdraws show up as a grade of “W' and will count toward your term credit load.

  • Your merit scholarship requires that you maintain a specific cumulative GPA.

DelVal provides academic support through peer tutoring and supplemental instruction.

Peer tutoring is available for select courses on a drop-in basis in Segal Hall during the fall and spring semesters. If you are interested in tutoring support, please consult the tutoring schedule which is available on myDelVal to see when tutors are available to help with specific courses.

Supplemental instruction is a program of weekly, peer-facilitated, problem-solving and review sessions in freshman-level math and chemistry courses. Supplemental instruction is designed to proactively support students in historically challenging freshman-level courses and is currently a required component of Fundamentals of Algebra, College Algebra, Calculus I, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II. Anyone with questions about tutoring or supplemental instruction should contact Larry Arrington, Associate Dean for Student Support and Engagement.
